Best Home Office Plants: 6 Options by Light and Space
Quick choice: Choose your home office plant around available light, mature size and the care you can maintain. A plant is a workspace decoration and a living thing to care for; it is not a guaranteed productivity upgrade or room air filter.

Before buying: three checks that prevent a poor fit
- Measure the space: Include the pot, saucer, foliage and clearance for your screen, lamp and cables. Check whether the listing shows the actual supplied size or a mature example.
- Assess the light: Read the supplier’s care label for the exact plant. RHS guidance distinguishes light requirements between houseplants; low light does not mean no light.
- Plan watering: Use the plant’s instructions and growing conditions rather than a fixed weekly calendar. Choose drainage that protects your desk, and lift the pot away from electronics before watering.
Six home office plant options to compare
1. Pothos
Trailing foliage suits a shelf or hanging planter. Plan enough room for vines and keep water away from electronics. Check the cultivar and expected mature size before choosing a small desk pot.

2. Snake Plant
An upright shape can suit a narrow floor space beside a desk. Measure the plant height and pot footprint rather than relying on a staged product photo. Check the care label for the exact plant.

3. ZZ Plant
A compact specimen can work as a foliage accent in a workspace. Check its light requirements against the actual location; a dark corner and a dim room are different conditions.

4. Peace Lily
Choose this for its foliage and possible flowers, rather than a promise to clean your room air. Check the care instructions and whether your chosen position provides the recommended light.

5. Spider Plant
The arching leaves and offshoots need more clearance than a small nursery pot suggests. The ASPCA species entry lists Chlorophytum comosum as non-toxic to cats and dogs; confirm botanical identity before purchasing.

6. Succulents
“Succulent” covers many species with different requirements. Buy a named plant with a care label, check your window conditions, and verify the exact species separately if pets can reach it.

How to compare Amazon plant listings
- Confirm whether you are buying a live plant, seeds, a cutting or an artificial plant.
- Check botanical name, supplied height, pot diameter and quantity. A decorative cover pot may be sold separately.
- Compare the delivered total, delivery conditions and the seller’s process for reporting transit damage. Save the care instructions supplied with the plant.
- Look at where the plant will sit during calls and daily work. Keep watering equipment off your keyboard and power connections.
Will a desk plant purify the air or boost productivity?
Do not buy on that promise. RHS notes that substantial numbers of plants and additional light may be needed for air-quality effects reported in research. A pleasant-looking workspace is a more practical reason to add one plant. This guide does not promise a percentage improvement in focus, stress or output.
What about pets?
Check the exact botanical name in the ASPCA database before bringing a plant into a space pets can access. Do not treat all succulents or all plants with similar common names as equivalent. A non-toxic listing is not an invitation to let pets chew the plant.
Make room before adding a plant
Use our desk organizer guide to free a stable location. For a small workspace, see our small-space desk guide. Keep a watering route that does not cross chargers or power strips.
